We started H-lab. because healthcare and research architecture deserves more than the attention of a generalist practice.

Before establishing H-lab., our founding architects spent more than two decades designing hospitals and research facilities across Korea and internationally. During that time, we recognized a persistent gap.

Healthcare projects were too often approached as technical problems to solve rather than places where people heal, work, and connect. Research facilities were engineered for performance, but rarely designed as inspiring environments that foster discovery.

H-lab. was created to bridge that gap.

We believe that good architecture embraces not only technical excellence, but also respect for people and a timeless beauty that continues to create value for generations.

우리는 의료시설과 연구시설이 일반적인 건축설계의 한 분야가 아니라, 더욱 깊은 전문성과 집중을 필요로 하는 건축이라고 믿었습니다.

H-lab.을 설립하기 전, 우리는 20년 이상 국내외 병원과 연구시설 프로젝트를 수행하며 하나의 공통된 한계를 발견했습니다.

의료시설은 종종 복잡한 기능을 해결하는 기술적 과제로만 접근되었고, 연구시설은 뛰어난 성능을 갖추었지만 공간으로서의 완성도와 사용자 경험은 충분히 고려되지 못했습니다.

H-lab.은 이러한 간극을 메우기 위해 시작되었습니다.

우리는 좋은 건축은 최고의 기술적 완성도 뿐만 아니라 사람을 향한 배려, 그리고 시간이 지나도 변하지 않는 아름다움을 함께 담아야 한다고 믿습니다.

At H-lab., every project begins with three core principles — Health, High-tech, and Humanity. Supported by our integrated six-stage design process and collaborative studio culture, these values shape architecture that is functional, timeless, and meaningful across a wide range of project types.

H-lab.은 Health · High-tech · Humanity라는 세 가지 핵심 가치를 바탕으로 설계합니다. 여섯 단계의 통합 설계 프로세스와 협업 중심의 스튜디오 시스템을 통해, 전문성과 공간의 아름다움이 조화를 이루는 건축을 실현하며 다양한 유형의 프로젝트에 일관된 철학을 적용합니다.

Health.

H-lab. does not see Health as a purely medical concept. We believe architecture is a foundation that supports human health and well-being. Beyond recovery and safety, we consider comfort, productivity, and the texture of everyday experience — designing hospitals and research facilities, but also workplaces and diverse living spaces where people can live and grow in good health.

H-lab.은 Health를 단순히 의료의 개념으로 바라보지 않습니다. 우리는 건축이 사람의 건강과 웰빙을 지탱하는 기반이라고 믿습니다. 회복과 안전은 물론, 편안함과 생산성, 그리고 일상의 경험까지 고려하여 병원과 연구시설뿐 아니라 업무시설과 다양한 생활 공간에서도 사람이 건강하게 살아가고 성장할 수 있는 환경을 만듭니다.

High-tech.

For H-lab., High-tech means spaces where advanced technology meets human creativity. From laboratories and research centers to innovation campuses, advanced workplaces, and technology-driven industrial facilities, we design environments that enable discovery, precision, collaboration, and the innovations that shape the future.

H-lab.이 말하는 High-tech는 첨단 기술과 인간의 창의성이 만나는 공간을 의미합니다. 우리는 연구시설과 실험실을 비롯해 혁신 캠퍼스, 첨단 업무시설, 기술 중심의 산업시설까지, 발견과 정밀성, 협업과 미래 혁신을 가능하게 하는 공간을 설계합니다.

Humanity.

For H-lab., Humanity is the essential value that gives architecture its meaning. We believe great architecture goes beyond being functional and beautiful — it must be intuitive for anyone to use, restorative to the mind, and deeply connected to people. Architecture should link people, place, and nature, enriching the fabric of everyday life.

H-lab.에게 Humanity는 건축에 의미를 부여하는 가장 본질적인 가치입니다. 우리는 좋은 건축이 기능적이고 아름다운 것을 넘어, 누구나 자연스럽게 사용할 수 있고 마음을 회복시키며 사람과 깊이 연결되는 공간이어야 한다고 믿습니다. 건축은 사람과 장소, 그리고 자연을 이어 주며 일상의 삶을 더욱 풍요롭게 만드는 역할을 해야 합니다.

Every H-lab. project follows six clearly defined phases — from strategic briefing to post-occupancy evaluation. Throughout the process, we bring together user requirements, technical systems, and human experience as one integrated design challenge.

모든 H-lab. 프로젝트는 전략적 브리핑부터 준공 후 사용성 평가까지 여섯 개의 명확한 단계를 따라 진행됩니다. 우리는 사용자의 요구와 기술 시스템, 그리고 사람의 경험을 하나의 통합된 설계 과제로 연결하여 완성합니다.

01Phase

Strategic brief전략 기획

Before drawing a single line, we conduct briefing workshops with users, facility managers, and operational teams. We look beyond space requirements to understand how an institution makes decisions, operates, evolves, and expresses its unique culture. Every design begins with this understanding.

우리는 첫 번째 선을 그리기 전에 사용자, 시설관리자, 운영 담당자와 함께 브리핑 워크숍을 진행합니다. 공간 프로그램을 정의하는 것에서 끝나지 않고, 의사결정 구조와 운영 체계, 미래의 성장 가능성, 그리고 기관만의 문화와 가치까지 이해하는 것에서 설계는 시작됩니다.

02Phase

Program & concept프로그램·개념 설계

Program planning, adjacency studies, and massing evolve together from the earliest stage. We test multiple design scenarios against operational workflows before making design decisions. A concept is complete only when the building clearly expresses how it will function, perform, and serve the people who use it.

공간 프로그램, 인접성 검토, 그리고 매스 계획은 초기 단계부터 함께 발전합니다. 우리는 다양한 설계 시나리오를 실제 운영 방식에 적용해 검증한 뒤 설계 방향을 결정합니다. 건물이 어떻게 운영되고, 어떻게 기능하며, 사람을 어떻게 지원하는지가 공간 안에서 자연스럽게 드러날 때 비로소 하나의 개념이 완성됩니다.

03Phase

Design development기본 설계

MEP systems, structural design, and architectural systems are developed as a fully integrated design. The specialized systems and key technical requirements needed to support user needs are defined and coordinated at this stage. At the same time, full-scale mock-ups and spatial simulations are used to evaluate the user experience, ensuring that technical excellence and human comfort evolve together.

기계·전기·설비(MEP), 구조, 그리고 건축 시스템은 하나의 통합된 설계로 발전합니다. 사용자 요구사항을 구현하기 위한 전문 시스템과 핵심 기술 요소는 이 단계에서 구체화되고 확정됩니다. 동시에 실물 모형과 공간 시뮬레이션을 통해 사용자의 경험을 검증하며, 기술적 완성도와 인간 중심의 공간 경험이 균형을 이루도록 설계를 발전시켜 나갑니다.

04Phase

Construction Documents실시설계

All disciplines — including structure, MEP, interiors, and landscape — are fully coordinated into a single, integrated system. Key user spaces are refined through detailed reviews and simulations to achieve the highest level of design quality. Throughout the process, we continuously validate construction costs to ensure the project remains aligned with its budget without compromising design intent.

구조, 기계·전기·설비(MEP), 인테리어, 조경까지 모든 분야의 설계를 하나의 통합된 시스템으로 완성합니다. 사용자가 요구한 주요 공간은 상세 검토와 시뮬레이션을 통해 최종 완성도를 확보합니다. 동시에 설계의 모든 단계에서 공사비를 지속적으로 검증하여, 설계 품질과 예산의 균형이 끝까지 유지되도록 관리합니다.

05Phase

Design intent implementation설계의도구현업무

The design architect remains actively involved throughout construction to safeguard the original design intent. We review shop drawings, material samples, mock-ups, and finish details to ensure that proportion, materiality, light, and spatial quality are faithfully realized. Critical site decisions are made by the senior architects who led the design, ensuring continuity from concept through completion.

설계는 도면이 완성되는 순간 끝나지 않습니다. 설계를 담당한 건축가는 공사 전 과정에 참여하여 최초의 설계 의도가 현장에서 그대로 구현되도록 관리합니다. 시공도면과 자재 샘플, 목업, 마감 디테일을 면밀히 검토하며, 공간의 비례와 재료, 빛, 그리고 사용 경험까지 설계한 그대로 실현되는지 확인합니다. 모든 주요 현장 의사결정은 프로젝트를 가장 깊이 이해하는 책임 건축가가 직접 수행합니다.

06Phase

Post-occupancy review사후 평가

Completion is not the end of the design process. Approximately one year after opening, we return to understand how the building performs in everyday use through interviews, user surveys, and operational data. Every insight becomes part of H-lab.'s evolving knowledge base, allowing each project to improve the next.

건물이 완성되는 것은 프로젝트의 끝이 아니라 새로운 배움의 시작입니다. 준공 후 약 1년이 지나면 우리는 다시 현장을 방문하여 사용자 인터뷰, 설문조사, 운영 데이터 분석을 통해 공간의 성능과 경험을 평가합니다. 그 과정에서 얻은 모든 통찰은 H-lab.의 설계 지식으로 축적되고, 다음 프로젝트를 더욱 정교하게 만드는 기반이 됩니다.
